south by southwest

my mom loves to do southwest chic.  turquoise, fringe, stonewashed and sun-bleached denim all top her list, and i've found that the older i get, the more i love it too!  Hartje Andresen's super-textured white-blond hair is the icing on the cake with the great mixture of khaki, leather, fur, snakeskin prints, and killer jewelry.

the jewelry is clearly what makes each look, featuring uber-cool jewelry superstars like Pamela Love, LowLuv by Erin Wasson, and Vicki Turbeville.  i'm starting to garner this crazy obsession with statement rings, so naturally, this shoot is like porn for me.  the LowLux by EW ring/bracelet in the first shot is everythinggggg to me right now.  everything.

baby, i'll be your huckleberry.

fashionably fit - SOULcycle

too often in the fashion industry, girls are painfully thin and unhealthy.  we understand the desire to be thin (especially with all those gorgeous clothes waiting to be bought at Barneys...), but there's a right way to do it...and that includes eating healthy, sleeping enough, laughing often, and EXERCISING!

New York City is full of options for getting your sweat on, but the absolute last word in spinning is SOULcycle! it's a kind of a ride you can't find anywhere else, and no matter where you are in the city, or even out in the Hamptons (or vacationing down in SoBe...they've got one there too!), there's a SOUL within reach.

(our home base, SOULcycle Tribeca)

whether you're an avid spinner (like we are!) or an occasional indulger, once you go SOUL, you can't go back.  transcending the traditional ride, SOULcycle instructors incorporate upper body and core workouts (push-ups on the bike, resistance bands that fall from the ceiling, and hand weights at each bike), have the sickest playlists for class, and can get your pumped up for a crazy sweat, even at 6 am.

there aren't many rules at SOULcycle, other than you must clip in, no cell phones in the studio, and the gentle request to please wear clean clothes. the studios, along with instructors, make for the most inspirational 45 minutes of your day.  dimly lit, candles burning, the mantra emblazoned on the wall... and the most passionate and motivated spin-obsessed New Yorkers out there... if you don't leave that room drenched in sweat, you've done something wrong.

for us on Sullivan Street, the best thing about SOUL is it's a place to leave it all behind.  any kind of stress or tension gets stripped away while Janet Fitzgerld (my favorite instructor) pushes you through tough climbs, and when you walk out of that studio, you feel lighter and you feel free.  "SOUL" isn't the name of this spinagogue for nothing.... it's a church for those who pray at the alter of sweat, hard work, and amazing bodies.

if you need more proof of what you're missing... a live shot from a "bad girls" themed ride... and yes, it's totally normal for spontaneous fist pumping and dancing to break out in class.  that's just how we ride, baby!

Athlete. Legend. Warrior. Renegade. Rockstar. SOULcycle.  enjoy the ride!!!

RIP Elizabeth Taylor - a true glamour icon

so beautiful, so glamorous, such a great strong eyebrow, and oh-so lovely.  we miss you, Dame Elizabeth.

"well, first of all, you must realize that i worship you.  second of all, at the expense of sounding repetitive, i love you.  thirdly, and here i go again with my enormous command of language, i can't live without you."
-Richard Burton, taken from one of his many love letters written to Elizabeth

feels so good being bad

a touch of bondage, a touch of menswear, and a lot of leather gives this beautiful editorial shot by Paul Maffi for V Magazine Spain the ultra cool rock and roll edge!  as always, i'm particular to the red lip, but the grommet belt and pleated trousers are calling out to me!  not to mention...the super cool, super tough tousled hair, done by the uber-talented Leonardo Manetti, paired with dashes of leopard print...pinch me. i'm in heaven!

girls we love - dashing daphne

one year ago, Daphne Groeneveld was one to watch, and now, the 16 year old dutch model is a bona-fide runway superstar!  those lips, my goodness!  Daphne is stunning and ethereal, two of our favorite qualities, and her unique look has taken her on a roller-coaster ride from skinny little high school girl to fashion icon, walking the runways of Gucci, Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Dior Couture, Alexander Wang, Givenchy Couture, Prada, and Jil Sander....landing the cover the much talked about Vogue Paris that Tom Ford edited, and she also has starred in ad campaigns for Givenchy and Miu Miu.

...not too shabby for a gal who can't even drive yet!  Daphne, we love you!!!

p.s. bonus round! her favorite model is fellow Dutch beauty Doutzen Kroes...so cute!

Hyden Yoo - FW 2011

it's not even a secret that, over here on Sullivan St, we love the 50's.  you can't tear us away from a good rockabilly look, even if you tried!  during NYFW, Hyden Yoo really tugged on the heartstrings with this ultra-cool, edgy, 50's-inspired collection.  easy silhouettes, smartly tailored pants that hit at the ankle, well-placed brooches, bookish knits, and a jazzy mix of doo-wop and british punk rock conjur visions of pretty girls and handsom boys having a drink in a smokey billiards hall... and that's exactly how Yoo presented!  up in the library at the SoHo House, models milled around with cigarettes, shooting pool, having a drink, and looking generally cool and hip.

wouldn't it be nice if all presentations were like this?  we love it when a designer gives us not only the clothes, but the type of woman who'd wear them, and the setting she'd wear them in!

how great is the hair?  we are partial to rockabilly hair, it's true...but we were swooning backstage when Marco Santini was making this happen...and immediately bookmarked this for the next time an updo is called for...

get your Elvis on, baby.

good stuff, right?  already looking forward to fall...and coveting the shearling wide lapel jacket!  it's so devil-may-care, sunday morning after a wild saturday night, let's go to brunch with our sunglasses on...

and for the bonus round....video!!!

this is MAJOR.  it was love at first view!  hope you enjoy as much as we do.

shops we love: Geminola

the fashion world had a resounding "who made that dress?!" moment when Carrie was chasing Big up the stairs in the final episode of Sex & the City in that ballet-inspired frothy green frock...

the answer to such burning questions is tucked away on a quiet block of Perry Street in the West Village... Geminola is just a hair bigger than a large walk-in closet, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in quality.  hand-made dresses made from vintage fabrics full of whimsy, fantasy, and all waiting to give girls their next princess moment.

(um, seriously. can i just live in here?)

Lorraine Kirk (who is one of the most gracious dress makers ever!) opened up shop in 2004, and fast became a downtown dress-making superstar with her dresses that are (seriously) hand-made, fabrics that are (seriously) all hand-dyed, and beautiful fabrics, ribbons, and beading that are (seriously) all vintage...pre-1950's.  and each gown is one of a kind.  fashionistas love exclusivity!

aren't they dreamy?  perhaps my favorite aspect of Geminola (2nd only to the dresses), is the shop itself.  like an overstuffed vintage closet, walking into Geminola is like visiting an old friend, and the shop girls are equally as inviting.  they will climb ladders to get a dress for you, zip zippers, tie ribbons, take pictures, and give their opinions (only when asked!), and it's the kind of customer service that makes you want to come back.  by the time you leave, you feel like you've made a new best friend.

over here on Sullivan St, we've had our own major Geminola moment....

so beautiful, isn't it?  i wore this delightful creation out on one of my favorite nights of my life (truly), and never have i felt more like a princess.  it's dramatic, bold, and took up almost two seats at dinner...and it's sweet, delicate, and lovely.  as is every dress from Geminola.  (and that hair? so perfect with the dress, is it not?!)  not only did i have a perfect night in this dress, i had the best time while purchasing it.  as mentioned, the shop girl was the best friend i'd never met, and we had the most wonderful time playing dress up while trying to find the perfect dress!

if you believe in really getting dress, like we do, Geminola is a must-stop when out shopping in downtown Manhattan!

visit Geminola at 41 Perry St and check them out here & on facebook!

2011 CFDA Awards Nominee Spotlight - Alexander Wang

last night, the CFDA Awards nominees were named, and it's hard not to notice that Alexander Wang popped up in several categories... nominated for Womenswear Designer of the Year, Accessories Designer of the Year, and the Swarovski Award for Menswear.  whoa! we haven't seen that kind of category domination since Marc Jacobs...who will be honored at this years ceremony with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award.

where Alex Wang, the new prince of darkness, has gone right is in the same vein as the most recent Chanel collection...he gets what women want.  he knows his target audience (downtown gals and off-duty models and girls who want to be off-duty models), knows what we love(easy, chic, edgy, can go day to night), and doesn't stray.  even his T by Alexander Wang line is spot on for the everyday t-shirts, leggings, and slouchy pants.  i fully admit to absolutely living in all of my AW and TbyAW pieces, and i'm never embarrassed to wear them twice in one week, either! they're classic, chic, well cut, and well made...and i'm never embarrassed to wear that.

his new store in SoHo is amazing...and the perfect next step for the brand, which is now growing by leaps and bounds.  Alex, who seems like one of the most humble and down to earth designers, is already at rockstar status, and on his way to becoming a major fashion powerhouse...

let's take a look at the Alexander Wang evolution...

fall 2007.  the earliest stages of Alex Wang.  tailored, edgy, dabbling in animal prints, feminine with snaps of menswear.

spring 2008.  i feel like this is where T by AW kind of wove it's way into the namesake line before breaking off.  casual, cool, easy silhouettes.  classic AW.

Resort 2009.  his first resort collection, and this is where i see the AW we know and love today starting to come into his own and stretch his creativity.  the black dress is beautiful.

Spring 2010.  knits, menswear, athletic wear, and leopard print.   this is when everyone else (other than the fashion set) starting craning their necks and noticing this young, vibrant kid who dances down the runways for his final bow.  for me, this was the collection that shot him to the moon.

Fall 2010.  the prince of darkness has arrived.  a collection of equal parts goth, chic, goddess, and wall street, Wang played with pinstripes, new silhouettes, and lots of velvet here.  and EVERYONE starting taking notice of his shoes and bags.  from New York to California and every state in between..he became the last word in cool.

Spring 2011. a white out!  i didn't love this collection on the runway but now that i'm seeing it out and about and being styled in various ways, i'm loving it.  bergdorfs did a great job styling this collection...it's worth checking out!  and by the time this collection hit the runway, Wang had already achieved rockstar status.  his front row was better than 90% of the shows at NYFW.

Fall 2011.  glittery pants, furry shoes and sunglasses, sheer, velvet, more fur, satin...omg.  this is his best collection yet.  it's so cool to see how he's evolved and how the Alexander Wang women has become more sophisticated without losing her edge.  the ivory satin top with shredded tails paired with the black skinny trousers honestly reminds of me Tom Ford in his Gucci days.  different customer, obviously, but insanely chic nonetheless.  (p.s. i already bought the sheer tunic in the last picture on Moda Operandi...can't wait!).

i'd be truly shocked if Wang doesn't clean up at the CFDA Awards and take home all the awards for which he's been named.  he has all the makings of a true fashion superstar... his clothes are well cut and well made, he keeps true to his asethetic yet evolves along with his customer, and ..most importantly..women love his clothes and love to wear them!

Good luck, Alex!  we're rooting for you!
